sandy hook elementary school. the teacher who for all intents and purposes risked her life in an attempt to save the lives of her children there. and i do want to call our viewer's attention to the left side of the screen here, president obama who is at andrews air force base, the president expected to hop on a plane to take air force one over to newtown, connecticut to take part in a vigil tonight. he'll be meeting with first responders, he'll also be meeting with family members of some of the survivors there. as you can see president obama making his way to air force one. kristen well welker who's standing by to travel with the president. what can we expect to hear from president obama tonight? >> reporter: as you mentioned, president obama is going to start off by meeting with the folks who were most affected by this tragedy as he arrives in newtown, connecticut. he'll be speaking with family members and first responders here at newtown high school. he said his comment also focus on the victims, on the lives lost. this is becoming an all too familiar path for this president. this will

in the recovery effort as super storm sandy struck the east coast. cuomo issued a statement part of which reads quote: we as a community mourn they're loss as two more families must spend the holidays without their loved ones. david lee miller in our new york city newsroom with more on this. david lee, what more do we know about the gunman at this hour. >> william spangler was an ex-con. he beat his own grandmother to death back in 19 0. at the time he was charged with second degree murder but he pled to manslaughter. he was released from prison in 1998. until six years ago he was on parole. the local police chief said today that spangler's criminal past raises serious questions about how he obtained firearms. >> spangler was a convicted felon so it doesn't -- you know, he is not allowed to possess weapons. so, you know, did he legally possess those weapons? no. we have had all kinds of weapons larcenies in town and around the county and in wayne county as of late so i don't know where those weapons came from but we are certainly going to find out. >> there is still no known motive for the ram

for the people of newtown and sandy hook, but last evening the president said it best. they inspire all of us through what they have done and the way their first responders and teachers and families and community have come together. let us hope that that inspiration leads to the same kind of resolve that the president had last evening. it's time for us to act. there's ample legislation that's out there that's in the hopper. it needs to be focused not only on gun control, but on mental health and youth violence as well, but not to act is to be complicit because we know this will happen again, and the slaughter of this innocence that took place has got to tug at the heart strings of every single parent in this country, and so it becomes all of our responsibility but certainly in the united states congress to take action and already there's an outpouring for members in my caucus, and i hope that we can reach bipartisan accord on this because there's many in the nra that certainly believe in universal background checks and as was pointed out by dianne feinstein and others, assault weapons, what p

: with the hurricane sandy that came through, are there a lot more rescues that need rescuing? >> there are not a lot of the by shops that needed rescuing. people took them to relatives and friends and things. but what we did see during hurricane sandy is that there are a lot of large dogs that needed help. i mean, you have your pit bulls and your dalmatians and large dogs that people couldn't readily move and take with them that we have rescue groups that are here in this area. i've been reading wonderful work that they've been doing to help those animals. >> gretchen: if somebody is interested in the beautiful dogs that you have here today, or any other dog, where do they go? >> mallpawsrescue.com. we do everything on-line. we are in need of volunteers and foster homes. our vet bills run 30 to $40,000 every month and every month it's a miracle that we're able to keep doing what we do because the need rises. it just seems all the time. >> eric: and food and supplies to clean up the rescue shelters, you can all help out. you can donate your time and money to help others do the same. >> if you can't
